TW: gross animal body functions
So my sister in law and her family has to live with us for a while. No biggy. However, her lab-mix is here too. He's a sweet dog, gets on well with my little terrier, both dogs are allowed on the furniture but her dog sleeps on the couch and he's....uhm...leaving little round white stains. I think it may be discharge from his penis.
1) is that a thing?
2) how do I ask my SIL without it being embarrassing
3) I can't afford one of those little green upholstery cleaners. What's the best way to hygienically clean my couch? I don't want her to feel bad about or seem like I'm a jerk but I cant stop thinking about it and it makes me feel queasy

Maybe it's salt calcification from his drool drying? I have a recipe I saw online (but can't find right now) that's like 2 teaspoons Dawn, 1 teaspoon vinegar and then water out in a spray bottle.

It is a thing.
For me, the Little Green Machine is just a very necessary part of dog ownership. I usually pick them up on sale for under $100. I even keep a spare!
There are upholstery sprays that can be vacuumed off after they dry.
Maybe make sure there is a blanket or washable pad that the dog can sleep on?

2) how do I ask my SIL without it being embarrassing I wouldn't...I see no benefit in asking.

I don't want her to feel bad about or seem like I'm a jerk but I cant stop thinking about it and it makes me feel queasy There are tons of pet couch covers on the market. I got 2 for my outside daybed and it is reversible and washes up nicely. I would get some of those. They wash up very easily/nicely and saves your couch. When my granddoggie visits (mastiff-so a lotta doggie), I do frequent couch vacuuming and mop my furniture. I use my spin mop and just make sure it is very wrung out. I do it right before bed so the furniture dries overnight. You would need to spot-clean those stains first but the mopping does a good overall clean-up.

I miss having fur friends…even with the extra work they bring…
I used to cover my couch with a blanket and wash it.
There are local buy nothing groups (I have had great experiences, your experience may vary) where some other pet lover might be willing to give a gift of help cleaning the couch with their machine once and then you could do blankets or inexpensive couch cover maybe…
My son’s beloved princess mittens wanted to go all shred demoness on furniture so we had blanketed and covered furniture for quite awhile and it was great for her forever matted hair (yes even with brushing she just had weird fur) etc too
